Hallmark Internship

During my Hallmark internship, I was taught the process of taking a card from its initial brief, right through to the final product. At the time Hallmark was just branching out into the word of Electronic Greetings Cards and with my knowledge of Flash and After Effects, I was asked to create an E Card from a previous idea the humour department had already got as far as storyboarding. Below are a few images from the final piece and at the bottom of the post, there is a video of the E Card as it plays out.

Whilst I was at Hallmark I was also taught about traditional greetings card and the process of bring them to life. I created several cards from templates and learned how to emboss them, add foil and give them extra details to really polish off the final appearance.

Overall it was a fantastic experience and I learned a lot about the greetings card industry and Hallmark as a company.

Character Design

Here are some of my previous character designs from several projects over the last few years. I have started with the most recent and gone backwards. Towards the bottom, some of these designs are very old, but I like to see them to remind me how far I have come over the years.

To start with, here is a print I made of a few of the characters I have designed and gone on to use in animated short cartoons. I used this print at my final show in University and it is still one of my favourite pieces.

I have quite a range of styles, these are just a few examples of previous character designs that I have gone on to use for different projects.

Here are a few examples of some of my previous design work:

This is the logo for The Workshop of the World, a collaborative art project. I liked the idea of a workshop using wood to craft things, so I decided to apply this to the logo and create an logo that might have been hammer together in a tool shed and then hung on the door. The positioning of the words, circling the world, are to show the freedom and creativity that the workshop encourages in its members. They are gathered and brought together by The Workshop but they are not governed by it.

WM productions were looking to brand the business side of their company and wanted a corporate logo that looked sleek and professional. Above is one of those designs. This particular colour of blue is a calming colour and I used it deliberately, wanting to display the companies relaxed approach to the workplace.

A university project on water conservation.

This glowing eerie logo appears to the backing track of wind howling through the trees. It implies mystery, magic and light in the darkness.

This is the opening shot from my digital portfolio. The weight drops onto the screen and becomes an interactive menu bar for the user to navigate around.

This is a logo I developed for a bird conservation project. The clock in the birds belly symbolises how time is running out for us to do something about the destruction of birds habitats. This logo was designed to be a stencil so that guerrilla artists could spray paint onto walls, lamp posts.

Above is an animated logo I created for the website imaginedoingthis.com - they run days where people can drive very fast sport cars around different racing tracks including Silverstone.

Lemons & Limes

The band Lemons & Limes wanted a website creating to advertise their upcoming gigs and to provide their fans with information on their band. They wanted a unique website, something they hadn't come across before. They brought me in because they liked my art style and I created the following website for them:

The navigation of the website was deliberately idiosyncratic. When the page loads, the first thing you see are birds sat on branches of the tree, each moving in a unique way. Each bird is clickable...and when you roll your mouse over the bird the title for the page appears above its head. This added an extra element of interactivity to the website that helped invite the user into the experience even further. There was also a pop up bird that gave information to you in the bottom right hand corner; you can just see the bird popping up in the image above :)

When you select a bird an information tab presents itself. This bar can be closed, much in the same way you close a window in any other user system, by clicking the icon in the top right corner of the box. The website had birdsong in the background, this could obviously become quite frustrating if you visited the page for a long time, so I integrated the option to turn it off by using the toggle button in the top right hand corner of the page.

This website was built entirely in Flash. When you visited the website it loaded into a separate window, almost like a pop-up. The page would then start dancing and moving around and catch the visitors interest.
A combination of Actionscript, Javascript and timeline manipulation went into this website.
The layout of the page is very unusual, but eye catching. This was a deliberate method of making the website stand out.
All of the graphics were hand drawn and animated by myself.

Eligh's Dark Fable was a University project based on a poem. This animation was later cut up and used as part of an interactive E Book by the original author of the poem, Paul Thomas Colley.
